NASA Earth Observatory Images of Queensland Flooding

January 6, 2011

The NASA Earth Observatory posted pictures of the recent flooding in Queensland, Australia.  Heavy rains, which began just before Christmas, have ended a multi-year drought, but swelled rivers to overflowing and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of Australians from their homes.  The flooding, blamed on this year’s strong La Nina effect, could continue for several more weeks.  In addition to billions in property damage, flooding has also impacted food and coal production in the region.  Global prices for coal, sugar, sweet potatoes, peanuts and other crops are expected to rise in the wake of this disaster.

The Earth Observatory is also keeping tabs on the continuation of flooding in Pakistan and a new round of floods in Andalusia, in southwestern Spain.
